New version of Flex Presentation Server out in November

According to the following InfoWorld article via Yahoo! News, Macromedia is planning to release version 1.5 of their Flex software.

Official Macromedia press release can be read here.

From the InfoWorld article:

Version 1.5 of Flex ships in November, with prices starting at $12,000 for a two-CPU system. Flex enables enterprise developers familiar with C# and Java to build rich client applications using prebuilt components and then to deploy them in the Flash client.

Ok, I like everything about that except for the $12,000 part. Not exactly cheap. I guess that is where Laszlo will have to fill the void for the curious.

At least we have a free and open source alternative, right?

Either way, Flash is definately widely used and in some cases abused. But many do have the Flash plugin installed (perhaps more than the JRE – Java Runtime Environment now days).

Maybe somebody needs to write a bunch of framework classes for C# and Java.

Something like a System.Web.UI, but with the result being a generated SWF.

And in the Java world, probably a replacement for the java.awt classes.

The Web UI needs a shakeup. But we also have to remember that there are still individuals who can not get access to broadband internet for various reasons.

But for the rest of the world, I think it’s time to revisit the SWF format once again and create that killer Web UI.

Something that would turn heads through simplicity of use, and simplicity to develop with.

I’m sure something will happen, quite possibly with Laszlo. It’s perhaps more a wait and see right now.
