Telstra i-mode launch November 1
Seeking somewhere cooler today, I headed to the local shopping centre (Chadstone), and walked around a little.
Actually, was hunting for a new hifi system (the old one has a non-functioning CD Player, and none functioning right speaker!).
When I went past the Telstra shop, I decided to drop in to see if they had any of the new i-mate devices, but got distracted by one of their LCD screens which was advertising the new i-mode Telstra services.
So I decided to enquire about their i-mode service. The lady looked quite shocked when I said I heard it was launching soon.
So I just added that I saw it in The Australian IT (which I did, the online version that is!).
Then the lady was like, ah, yes, you’re a few days early! Indeed I was, it’ll launch Australia wide on Monday, 1st of November.
So, what do you need to know about developing websites for i-mode devices?
Well, i-mode devices use a subset of HTML known as cHTML or Compact HTML.
If you’re an ASP.NET developer, download the MS Mobile Internet Toolkit and play around with the Mobile Controls (they are prefixed with And make sure you set the page to target cHTML. Here are some more resources for developers: - http://weblogs.asp.net/jld/archive/2004/10/03/237129.aspx Well, we’ll see how Telstra launches this on Monday.

Nice to see that the digital signage we developed for Telstra is actually catching peoples attention
Now we have done our bit for i-mode, i can’t wait to see if this little experiment works out for Telstra…
Out of interest, did you find any info on building sites for i-mode on the telstra website??

Mick, the only reason I noticed it is because it’s an LCD screen, and also people generally get attracted to animated things as opposed to non-animate objects!
Thus far? Nope, I haven’t been able to find any information about i-mode on Telstra’s websites.
Which would probably explain why the people in the Telstra shop didn’t know too much about it.
I’m also surprised there isn’t much about it in the mainstream paper media outlets (Fairfax/News Ltd).
All the Telstra related news is about the sale of Telstra, etc…
