150th Year Anniversary of the Eureka Stockade

So, it’s the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade uprising in the goldfields of Ballarat, in Victoria.

Have just listened to the first two g’day world podcasts by Cameron Reilly and Mick Stanic, and that reminded me about reading the news (during lunch break) about something which played quite a significant part of Australian history. (That is, the Eureka Stockade uprising, and what it represented).

It is something I got taught about in my history lessons in Primary School, and a bit during High School.

I don’t really remember too much, but I do remember the flag. I think the story of Eureka came up when the teacher was telling us about the Gold Rush (as part of Australian History).

Anyway, rather than me retell the story, i’ll just provide some links… Eureka Stockade, Eureka Stockade Flag, Article from today’s Australian Newspaper, Something from ABC Online.

I will say one thing though, if Australia ever decides to change their flag, the flag with the Southern Cross, surely has to come into contention.

It’s a really nice flag, and it represents something of our country’s past.

Speaking of changes of something official, in the last few years there has been mention of people proposing changes to our national anthem.

I know not many people can recite it, I can recite most of it off by heart, except for a few lines. And there have been two versions of it I believe. At one stage during my schooling, we actually used the longer version for a few years.

The most commonly suggested replacement has been Waltzing Matilda (as it seems many more people know this one!).
