more on tsunami

You know that everyone has been touched when all three commercial TV networks set aside all their differences and jointly hold a telethon/concert to raise funds to World Vision Australia for the Tsunami aid effort.

What an effort, well done to all involved!

The tv show is listed as “Australia Unites Concert – Reach Out To Asia“.

This event truly is all Australians uniting for a common cause, and the generosity of the global community is the world uniting to help out!

Tommorow will be Australia’s national day of mourning for this total disaster.

Australians are asked to observe a minute’s silence at 11:59am tommorow by our Prime Minister John Howard. He also asks that we wear a wattle tommorow.

On another note, I thought I’d just share a link to photos taken by a member of the ricebowl journals community (WARNING: Some may be disturbed by the pictures posted) who goes by the board name of paul_ark.

Paul is one of the volunteers who donated his time and energy in Thailand to assist with the disaster relief efforts in the Khao Lak area, which is north of Phuket.

It gives you some sense of what a momoth task the volunteers have been doing and will continue to do into the future.

There’s many many tasks that volunteers are performing over there in the countries affected.

It is going to take a big effort to clean up everything. But the effort is already underway in many areas, and much of it is being done by volunteers, many are just everyday people touched by the tragic events.

There are many stories coming out of the tsunami disaster, many not told by the main stream media, but instead, by bloggers.

That’s the great thing about blogs, there are just so many voices and so many opinions out there. We get to hear/read much more than we otherwise would.

During the day’s telecast it was just announced that they had raised $15million dollars (telecast started at 6:30pm AEST, and the announcement was made at 9:40pm AEST).

Update: Decided to do a technorati search on it to see if I can find any Aussies out there that watched it, and their comments, I came up with the following technorati query

Update 2:: Paul has put words to the pictures in his blog, here.
Update 3: Day 2 and Day 3 via Paul’s blog.

Hi Will :) Came here through your comment on my blog–just wanted to say, I’m actually an American here on sort of working holiday–I’ve been very impressed by the generosity Australians have shown. Just wanted to say hello.

    Heya Will,

As a fellow Aussie, I agree, the people of our country are responding to this disaster in a totally appropriate way and I’m quite proud of us all. :)

However, I just thought I’d let you know that the national day of mourning is on the 16th – a week away! So don’t go picking that wattle down just yet. ;)

    Cheers,
    Matt

Matt, woops! My bad. We all make mistakes once in awhile :P — Fixed!

Janelle, I was actually looking around at blogs who commented on the tsunami appeal, and ended up on your blog :)

Actually, after awhile, going through your blog I realised you were an American, but that’s ok :)
