apple’s potential with the release of the mini-mac
With the release of Mac mini, with it’s very small form factor, I’ve started to brainstorm some ideas where a computer (any computer, running any OS) of that size can be used.
The specs list the device at a very small 16.51cm [6.5"] (W) x 16.51cm [6.5"] (D) x 5.08cm [2"] (H), which is very tiny.
Ok, not that small, but small enough. It’s almost the size of one of my old primary school lunch boxes! (That’s if I had a square one rather than a rectangular one).
The weight of it is listed as 1.32KG (2.9pounds), which is quite reasonable as well.
Very nice, sleek, design, form factor, weight… I’m sure there’s going to be many copycats…
Alright, now to put some brains to work here.
If Apple wanted to into the living room (where MS have headed to with MCE), this form factor would be perfect.
All you need to do is have a remote control, an easy to use interface for navigation with the remote control. And then connect it all up to the tv.
Now that is the potential that Apple has with this device, small enough to not overcrowd the already overcrowded living room space.
I wonder if anyone has thought about modding the case?
Add a LCD display to the front of the mac mini, that would sit well with many modders out there.
There’s already plenty of cases out there which sport little LCD front panel displays.
Would I buy a mac mini? Well, it looks nice, if I do, i’d probably hold off for a few more months, hear many more reviews and see how it goes.
Well, it would be my first ever mac. (Assuming I had decided to buy it).
I think hooking one of these to the network in the near future would be much more worthwhile though.
$499 for a 400GB external drive that I can hook up to my router (to share among my 3 desktop pcs at home).
Much thinking to do on this one… External drive or Mac mini?
Maybe wait until after Apple releases their new OS and hope they bundle the new OS with the Mac mini. According to an engadget article (don’t remember which one), it’s supposedly due sometime before mid year.
Ok, so what else could be a good use for the new mac mini?
