MSN Messenger Error Message: 81000378
While attempting to log into MSN Messenger this evening it kept giving me the error message: 81000378
It said something about being unable to load my contact list.
I thought, this might be something to do with MSN Messenger (eg: some part of it was down for maintenance).
Noticed it said it was all systems go!
Next chain of thought, everythings seems ok with MSN Messenger, so what about the .NET Passport login service?
And I also remembered that inside Hotmail, if you were logged into MSN Messenger you can see the online status of your contacts in your address book. Otherwise they would be marked as offline.
So to hit two nails at once, I just logged into Hotmail, that proved that .NET Passport was working. And then I noticed there was that “Offline” icon that you normally associate with a contact being offline placed right next to my hotmail address.
So I clicked on the drop down arrow, and selected “sign in”. I noticed then that MSN Messenger sitting on my system tray had logged in.
Next thought, cool, better remember this for next time!
Update 06/07/2005: This post was written long ago, and I know there’s been a lot of comments to this post recently because there seems to have been a problem with MSN Messenger. Please note that I do not guarentee that what I wrote about will work for you. But it worked for me when I had experienced the problem back in January. If you end up wasting your time and it doesn’t work, then sorry about that!
– 05/10/2006 – Comments have now been closed off.
There are a lot of other, more useful resources out there that can offer help on this issue.
Other things to try:
- The Messenger Support Space.
- … logging in via MSN Web Messenger (then do a proper sign-out on that. Then try logging back in with your MSN Messenger client)
- … logging in via Meebo
If it all fails?
Just head to the Windows Live Messenger support area, and see how far that gets you.
Or alternatively, just take a break. Go for a walk, do something different.

i tried everything. nothing works for me. what do i doo!????….HELP!
March 22nd, 2005 at 06:26 am
Well, I finally got that method to work too!
I was getting the same error, and then stumbled on this thread.
The only problem I had was that I couldn’t find anywhere in my Hotmail account where I could change my Messenger status, and also could not see the status of my contacts.
Then, I thought maybe it was because I use Firefox as my web browser and figured you’d need to use IE for something like that.
So, I launched IE and followed your stpes. Itu worked!
I dunno why, but it did. Thanks!
April 1st, 2005 at 11:45 pm
I can only agree with Aaron….
and if you still keep having this problem just use e-messenger http://www.e-messenger.net

At first i used Mozilla Firefox and i couldnt see the icon for the messenger status, i thought, you probably need Internet Explorer to see the icons, just my luck, i saw it on Internet Explorer:D, then i follwed all your directions and it didnt work for me… i guess, you win sum, you lose sum.
I lost this time

July 6th, 2005 at 09:20 am
Aaron ur not by any chance a technician in cork, ireland are u? anyway thats a wee bit off topic, i’ve had this problem, tried this “back door” method, but to no avail. would love to know what this thing is about, as the official help page for MSN is unaccessable for me at least, i’ve pretty much nowhere else that i can try….
July 6th, 2005 at 09:27 am
also, thanks for the link to e-messenger, but that wont work either, it logs me in and all that, but my javascript stuff isnt configured right, nothing displays except links etc…

July 6th, 2005 at 09:50 am
Hi;
The Microsoft MSN Network seems to be undergoing some repairs. This is causing various errors when trying to sign in.
Don’t change anything – it’s not a problem on your end. From time to time the Messenger network undergoes repairs, maintenance & upgrades.
If you start messing with your Messenger you run the risk of creating a problem – when one doesn’t exist.
The answer right now is to wait a while until the MSN crew fixes, upgrades or repairs the network.
If the problem persists after the network is repaired then you might actually have a problem on your end.

oh my god its not working!! u lierd!! god! it doesnt work and im mad!!
July 6th, 2005 at 10:01 am
i too am having the same problem, i went to the hotmail site and did follows and it work i was able to log on but still no contacts!
July 6th, 2005 at 10:04 am
hey everybody, i HAD the problem the first idea works to say…but i believe i know why…my best guess is, you all lost your internet instantly and u were thought to be connected on the server side and the first solution works because when you log in well of coures the server knows you’re logged in..i’m sure the problem is a conflict bettween a user who is online who cannot sign out, but in realit they are not even signed in…ok i’m babbling sorry…if you still have a problem petersfield log into MSN using emessenger like someone said and make sure you log out the anoying way…insted of clicking the close button…you should beable to log in after that…hopefully i didn’t just put usless information into the forum…oh by the way Aaron…don’t use the power you get from saying you’re a computer tech…i am prod to say i’m not microsoft cirtified because that way i know the hacky ways to do thing insted of the ways everyone else trys…

Hi All
I agree with 15yrcomptech.
I was having a heck of a time getting into MSN this morning and tried all sorts of things to try and get it working, but the wierd thing was that the very first time that I tried to log in MSN told me that I had tried to log on too many times incorrectly – which didn’t make sense and then the subsequent times it gave me the error message all of you had.
So I logged into hotmail and tried to look at 1 of my contacts but it told me that there weren’t available. So I went into WebMessenger and signed in without a problem and then signed out properly.
Then I was able to sign in to msn messenger .
But in between all of this you get the Error: 81000314 as well you should try steph’s suggestion above and re-register one of the messenger dlls.
Hope that helps.

,,,vero – quite correct.. good advice from ron too.. but come on people, you dont need to be a rocket scientist to realise that from time to time systems fail or require some sort of maintenance. my messenger failed 20minutes ago now but the net still works, but even if it didn’t it’s no cause for alarm.. might i suggest going & playing tidley winks for an hour or so,, or go shopping,, or whatever.. ‘cos at the end of the day these problems are all covered by age old adages,, i.e. ‘if it aint broke – don’t try to fix it !’ & ‘a watched kettle will undoubtably take 3 & a half weeks to boil’….
oh, p.s. emessenger suxx ass big time… so there
July 6th, 2005 at 11:05 am
Thank you for the help! I was going bonkers trying to figure out how to fix this or what I had done to cause it. When Signing in the main msn window I changed sign in as from offline to online and it fixed the problem. Thanks again for the help. Have fun !
July 6th, 2005 at 11:43 am
someone mentiond having a lot of contacts… maybe it happens to us with a lot. how many do all of you guys have… i have about 200.. so maybe its if you have a lot of contacts

p.s. im so glad they made the max contact limit higher… i dont know what it is.. buts it’s not 150 anymore

I either get error message 81000377 or 81000378
I’ve been trying to login for 4 hours now and haven’t been able to at all!
MSN Messenger will definitely be losing users this way! Luckily I can still use AIM and Yahoo.
According to this blog site this is a common occurence with MSN Messenger. That’s pretty bad!
July 6th, 2005 at 12:24 pm
I think its a thing with the new integration with Hotmail (quote ‘Easy integration with MSN Messenger – Utilize the same Contact Lists’) As soon as I visit the Hotmail page, the problem goes away…
July 6th, 2005 at 12:26 pm
OMG!!! I was actually able to login. RIGHT after sending my previous message. I was loging into AIM at the same time and all of the sudden MSN Messenger logged in!

I don’t know why or how, but I had the same error message today, I tried signing in again and again and it didn’t work, and then finally resorted to googling the error and, well, here I am and it worked! Only the second time I tried though, and maybe this has something to do with it (though maybe it doesn’t):
First time I logged into hotmail and clicked Sign In on the drop down menu, I still had messenger running behind and the sign-in screen and the error message were still up. I thought what the heck so I tried closing down messenger and then it was after I did that that your method worked… strange strange stuff but whatever it’s working so I’m happy!
July 6th, 2005 at 02:11 pm
Hey just wanted to say thankyou so much…i had the same exact problem and tried what u said and it worked instantly…you are a genius!!!!!!!!!!
July 9th, 2005 at 05:59 pm
mine keeps jumping from ‘81000377′ to 81000378′ to ‘temporarily unavailable’, never signs in. Whats does ‘contact list no available’ mean anyway, sounds like a network problem, not something on my comp. Shouldnt they release some sort of official statement to let us know its down?
July 9th, 2005 at 06:17 pm
I’m experiencing the same problem with error code 81000377. Some one said having too many contacts would have caused the problem. But I’ve just 23 contacts. Still I’m not able to sign in. I’ve tried all methods suggested in this forum. Nothing works for me.

How come I NEVER have any of these errors or issues with Yahoo or AOL? Doesnt matter what settings I have for my firewall, if they can get thru so should messenger. Then you throw in .NET services and it all goes to hell and handbag. I am FED up with MSN messenger. It seems every other day I have to dig through blogs to figure out how to get around BS errors I get. Ridiculous….

All,
The issue is MSN’s Uk allocation of servers over loading with the volume of users routing from the uk.
Msn on failure to connect msn will attempt other servers falling over from server to server (switchboards) untill it gets a connecton.
The reson hotmail works is because this used a direct sign in to .net into the usa sign in route. The demand and load capabillites for this are huge.
Upon creating a sucsssefull conection to the service via this route allows other applictions to pick up and us teh connection.
Msn messsager is designed (very cleverly) to auto detect an exsiting service connection and use that.
Regards
Your Local Microsoft Techi
PS service status will never change its just a PR status message.
(Techis have also doctored it due to the fact if that ever showed a failure that would be there jobs gone)

Hi,
What worked for me:
I normaly always log on with the status OFFLINE. That did not work. Tried to logon as NOT AVAilABLE: same thing still error 81000378.
Then I decided (based on this thread) to log on as ONLINE and it went without an issue. Version 7: logon with the status you want to.
Hope it works!

Your solution worked for me. I had waited, tried signing in MANY times, restarted my computer ….nothing worked. Logged into Hotmail, clicked the dropdown by my offline Icon, clicked sign in and BOOM….I was logged in. I think the computer technician who says you are wrong is probably as helpful as most IT people who think they know everything. It definitely worked!! Thanks……

im still having the problem regardless of going through the msn trouble shooting pages, and methods. the first method described above isnt working, nor are any of the other methods. hopefully something works eventually.
October 24th, 2005 at 04:09 am
i tried logging into msn web messenger, and spoke to a friend quickly, then when i logged off of that i tried again with the messenger which is on my computer and i am currently online.
so hopefully it might help to try that
-log onto msn web messenger,
-log out
-log on to normal messenger
good luck.

May 19th, 2006 at 08:27 pm
Kudos to you mate. I’ve not had this problem before (had just about every other one!)
Your solution worked fine! Cheers.
May 20th, 2006 at 01:40 am
OMG I don’t know why, and wouldn’t believe it had I not experienced it, but this worked.
I’ve been having an 81000314 error for hours. I tried all of the install/uninstalls, different versions, different accounts (which worked!), logging into hotmail first.. everything I could think of/find.
Turns out you have to log into hotmail using IE NOT Firefox, and use the dropdown menu where it says “Offline” and select signin.
Long time listener first time caller.
Worked a charm.
Thankyou guys.

Can someone please help. I’ve been using e-messengerat work for a week now after my IT department came and locked off everything on my new PC (inc msn messenger v7.5). Yesterday I trued logging in and kept getting an error message “Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.†I’ve got other friends to try and log in via e-messenger and they have been able to get through. Any ideas why it won’t work for me?

Had the same problem (Erorr 81000314). It occurred after I took MSN advise and updated Messenger (won’t make that mistake a second time!). Solved it by right clicking on the systray cion and selecting ‘Sign in as …’
Hope that helps someone else too.

I get the 81000314 error with main log in, but other works fine. Tried installing the LIVE messenger, still no luck, then finally able to get on. That lasted maybe 2 days, not back to getting error message, and again only on main login. When I tried the signing in messenger through hotmail in IE, it fails. Shall keep trying, see if does work eventually.

Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

AppName: msnmsgr.exe AppVer: 7.5.324.0 ModName: msnmsgr.exe
ModVer: 7.5.324.0 Offset: 00209a68
anyone know whats rong with it? it hasnt worked for about 9 months!
ive tried deleting it and reloading it, but that hasnt worked, and ive tried lower versions of msn and they havent worked eithe.r anyone know how to help?
thanks

September 11th, 2006 at 10:21 pm
MSN has a mind of its own as previous people have said! I tried a few times to login and it didnt work. Got a new IP from my ISP and that still didnt help. Used another hotmail account which worked straight away. Tried my original one and it didnt work. Got frustrated and kept clicking connect and it eventually worked .. piece of shite! Everyone should migrate to something else but then that would be to difficult for the majority .. peace!

Guys this really works…
add these two line to HOSTS file…
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
remember to remove them after two or three days since dats a temporary solution!
September 12th, 2006 at 12:46 am
Dear all if you have not heard simply add these addresses to the following
file that should be opened with notepad and MSN will work.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts – (When you open the ETC folder open
the HOSTS file using notepad).
insert the following addresses:
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.skadns.net
(INSERT THEM DIRECTLY UNDER THE OTHER 2 ADDRESSES AND ALIGN THEM WITH TAB.)
Easy done … good luck.

September 13th, 2006 at 06:24 am
I have perhaps stumbled across a possible solution.
My colleagues and I communicate and share files with windows live messenger, so I know other accounts and passwords associated with my business. Being unable to login with my own account (the error message……) I logged in on my computer using a colleague’s hotmail address. I then logged out and closed messenger down.
When I started the messenger program up again it went straight into my account, with no error message. Is this pure chance, a coincidence, or a way round it?

October 4th, 2006 at 01:18 am
Error 81000314, error 81000377 or error 81000378: Your contact list is not available
Your address book or contact list is not available or is in read-only mode. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again.

Hello.
I have the same problem as many people above – getting the error message 81000378 saying, that my contact list is not available so the MSN is unable to sign in.
First of all I would like to calm everybody down who is really upset about this error. I can tell you that I have tried everything (and I mean everything) to make my MSN work again, but unfortunately with no success.
So, what could be wrong with your MSN program? The answer is: Nothing is wrong with your MSN program, there is something wrong with your MSN account. Re-Installing your MSN will not help, because your contact list is not saved on your PC, but on Hotmail’s server in your account. Since there is no option to make your contact list available when signed in on Hotmail’s website, you have only 2 possible solutions:
1.) Wait for a while. This “while” can take from several minutes to several hours, maybe even days, so do not get upset, angry or nervous if your MSN will not sign in in about few minutes. (Mine did not sign in for 2 days!) After waiting try logging back into the MSN. If it works – lucky you, enjoy again chatting with your friends! If it does not work – try the second solution written bellow.
2.) Make a new MSN account. You will probably say “Good solution – NOT!” Well, trust me. It is the only thing you can do if you want to chat with your friends again. And it is even faster way to get back into “chat business” than waiting for your contact list to be available again. But now you will say “OK, I can make another account, but it won’t serve me, since I don’t remember my contact’s MSN addresses.
” Well, guess what? YOU CAN GET THE ADDRESSES!
Go to http://www.hotmail.com and sign in with your msn account that does not work on msn. Click the CONTACTS button and voila – you now have all the addresses that are in your MSN! It seems that hotmail services and messenger services run on two different servers, and that is why you are able to sign into hotmail, even if you cannot sign into MSN. (Correct me if I am wrong, but this is how I understand the possibility of signing into hotmail whether MSN is available or not.)
So, this would be all. I regret that I was unable to give you some software style solution – if I knew a working software solution I would tell you right away! Just remember one thing – DO NOT PANIC IF YOUR MSN WILL NOT SIGN IN! TRY ONE OF TWO POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS OF MINE – ONE OF THEM WILL DEFINITELY WORK!
-Sincerely,
InTenZz
P.S. If you do not like my solutions, then send an e-mail to hotmail staff to help you sort out the problem or whatever… But since they will probably tell you that you should only wait for a while for the MSN to start working back, I think it is a bit worthless…
October 4th, 2006 at 03:04 am
i tryed it n still wnt work arrrh lol
thanks anyway xx
October 4th, 2006 at 04:31 am
hmmm looks like i have the same problem as everyone
, i tried your thread but doesn’t work, got any sugestions, or will it just sort its self out within a few days, need it back soon to contact people, they dont seem to read their email, if anyone is worried about losing all their contacts, get them back by looking on msn under contacts and therefore re-typing them into your new hotmail account(havn’t done that, its a suggestion)
October 4th, 2006 at 06:04 am
I’m a life saver you can call me, My real name is JACK, I’m a computer tech., the solution for your problem is the following : Download MSN Messenger 8.0 or higher, here’s the link : http://www.msgshit.com/downloads/605/Windows-Live-Messenger-8.1-Beta.html

October 4th, 2006 at 06:05 am
can somebody please better explain this solution? i dont understand it all all. Where am i inserting what? and how do i get to the place where im inserting it?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts – (When you open the ETC folder open
the HOSTS file using notepad).
insert the following addresses:
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.skadns.net
